Kandy which is a World heritage city similar to a mirror which shows the identity of our nation.  Out of twenty Divisional secretary’s divisions in Kandy district, Gangawata korale was identified by that name because of surrounded by Mahaweli river.  It is consisted with  76.6 square km in extent. This division is bounded on the North by Harispattuwa Divisional Secretary’s division, on the south by pathahewaheta  Divisional Secretary’s division, on the west by Udunuwara and Yatinuwara divisional secretary’s divisions and on the East by kundasale Divisional  Secretary’s division.
This divisional secretary’s division consists of two electoral divisions Kandy and Senkadagala, two local government institutions, Kandy Municipal Council and Gangawata Korale pradeshiya sabha , 64 Grama Niladhari divisions and 281 Villages.  Old village council authority area is being Gangawatakorale and Hewahata Gang  Dehaya  Korale and Ganga Palatha Korale can be taken as Korale Pattu.
This division situated at Kandy plateau which is expanded on the North of Central hills and being a ripple land in the South bank of Mahaweli river. It’s average height is  1000 – 5000 feet from sea level.  Average rainfall in this area belongs to wet zone is between 1000 - 1200 mm.  Highest period of rainfall in the year gets by convectional and South-West monsoon rain.  Average temperature in this area is   30  centigrade.  A drainage system expanded from East to West and North and from South to North can be seen.  These begin from Hantana mountains and Hewaheta high land and join Mahaweli river.  Those are in the directions of South and West, Peradeniya and Getambe,  on the north by Katugasthota  and Hewagama join Mahaweli river.
Further, there  are ground water resources related lime stone layer expanded under the earth as a tape from South to North in the divisional Secretary’s division.  Blister on surface of the earth situated at Gatambe can be shown as an eg;-
Kandy lake situated at the center of Kandy city and Gundumale reservoir which is above to Bogambara playground and Dunumadalawa lake are being lakes in the area.  Udawatte kale reservoir is the only natural forest.
Population in the area is about 173,  121  and all groups of people Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, Burgher living in very unity and co-operation. When considering historical situation, this area was existed as ancient Kingdom and has  very historical value.Sri Dalada Maligawa where most Sacred Tooth of Relic which is like holy of holies of  Buddhists, Sathara Maha Devalayas, Buddhist temples, Hindu temples and Mosques, state meritoriousness of this area well.  Kandy city where this sacred premises situated is cartulary and historically important as well has been named as a world heritage city.

Historical Background

Area surrounded by Haragama junction, Egoda kundasalaya, Egoda Lewella, Egoda Watapuluwa Ford, Egoda Mahaiyawa guard post, Uda Halolu Ford, Udaperadeniya, Aththanagaha style, uda Gatambe ford has been identified as ‘Ruhunu Rata’ according to ancient boundary books.  Area surrounded by these boundaries is very similar to land of Kandy.  Four Gravet and Gangawata  Korale Divisional Secretary’s Division at present.  Though it was called as ‘Ruhunu Rata’ by 14th century, Kandy was identified as ‘Katapuluwa’ according to Asgiri Palmyra leaf.  Likewise, it is stated that there is a history   exceeding years.
The king Pandit Wickramabahu  from 1357 to 1374  AD  who strongly believed that Kandy as a victorious land and acted to initiate Senkadagala kingdom there.  Though there are various folklores and literary information about creation of the name of Senkadagala, three opinions such as to commemorate Senkada permit, princess of Senkada and having gem coloured  rock are considered to be main opinions.  After establishing Senkadagala Kingdom it was called as ‘Udarata’ and consisted with 05 countries.  Since this Senakadagaka area was large in extent out of these  05 countries  and there are factors to prove usage the name of  Kandy from that time.  In 1952 Ad, king  Wimaladharmasooriya  first  kept kandy as capital and  initiated the kingdom of Kanda udarata.  After king  of Navendrasinghe who ruled between   1707-1739  AD, Sri Wijaya Rajasinghe (between  1739  and  1749 )   who was descendant from Nanayakkara ancestry of south Indian lineage got royal inheritance of Kandy.  There are factors that Malabar street situated in the mid of city turned to be a colony of Nanayakkara lineage in the name of Dharmapala street.
Sri wickremasinghe was crowned in 1798 AD and ruled until 1815 AD at the time of upcountry be subjugated to British. By 1815 AD Kandy district had been divided into 09 areas identified as ‘Rata’. These ‘Ratas’ ruled by ‘Rate Rala’ or ‘Rate Mahattanaya’. Kandy area was belonged to yatinuwara. Later, this Yatinuwara area has been divided into three electoral divisions such as Yatinuwara, Senkadagala and Kandy. Two electoral divisions Senkadagala and Kandy belong to Gangawata Korale Divisional Secretary’s division.
